Chapoutier Les Tanneurs Saint-Péray

Saint-Péray is the southern-most appellation of the northern Rhone. Once a source of sparkling wine that rivalled Champagne in quality and price until its vineyards were devastated by phylloxera. At just 89ha in total, it’s a tiny zone on the west bank of the Rhone, in a picturesque valley created by a tributary called the Mialan. This is nearly all Marsanne, with a splash of Roussanne. Grapes are grown on both sides of the Mialan valley- one side with granitic soils that add freshness and fragrance, the other, chalk, which brings minerality and complexity. A portion is fermented in oak to add a creamy, nutty backdrop. Pear, peach and fennel on the nose. Orchard fruits on the palate, with a fine mix of honey and vanilla. There’s a lovely structure to this, with a broad palate freshened up by a chalky mineral streak on the finish. Not a bottle to quaff to Eastenders, this is a serious, gastronomic white that shows off Marsanne’s unique textural shape and wonder.
