Esk Valley Albarino

We’re in Hawkes Bay, on the East coast of New Zealand’s North island, in the hands of one of the most respected Kiwi winemakers, Gordon Russell. A special site this though- Two Terraces vineyard is on the banks of the Ngaruroro river, the furthest inland of Esk’s vineyards, with a drier climate than more coastal sites. This was the first vintage made from this vineyard, which proved to be a bit of head-scratcher. Albarino’s used to coping with heavy rainfall back in its native Gallicia, and this rainfall helps to temper the variety’s ferocious acidity. Whilst the sugar levels suggested it was time to pick, Gordon decided to wait and wait for the autumn rains to fall. The fruit was then fermented with wild yeast in large oak barrels. First up, what a beautiful colour! Inviting aromas of blossom and citrus. Focussed, intense palate of pear and citrus, with a slightly orangey-pithy feel on the finish and a saline twist. The acidity is still lively, but is beautifully balanced by that weight of mid-palate ripe fruit.
