Hans Secret of Marlborough

Hans Herzog heralds from a Swiss family of winemakers going back over 500 years. He moved to New Zealand where he was free to experiment with grape varieties not permitted back home. His new home is an old apple vineyard on the edge of Rapaura just beside the Wairau river, with what is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's finest Michelin-starred restaurants adjacent to the winery. The proximity to the river has created a warmer microclimate where Montepulciano can flourish. Handpicked grapes that go through a long, cool wild yeast fermentation. The resultant wine matured in a mix of old an new French oak barrels, exudes dense raspberry and cherry fruit, plums, mocha and vanilla notes with firm tannins. A gastronomic tour de force.
