ReFINE:
1. MASSAYA LE COLOMBIER

There are many reasons why you should buy this wine. I'll list but a few: i. It will transport you to the Levant, with a unique aromatic profile that will blow your mind. ii. At this price, it's a complete bargain. iii. You will be supporting the valiant efforts of brothers Sami & Ramzi Ghosn, who have overcome challenges that we cannot comprehend, creating and growing a business in a deeply troubled land. iv. If i, ii, and iii aren't enough, then I give up.

2. Emiliana Vigno Carignan

From a 70 year old block of dry-farmed (zero irrigation) Carignan grown in Cauquenas, Maule. Highly aromatic and brooding ruby red and charged with intense notes of blueberries and raspberries. The acidity keeps everything nicely in check and the firm but well integrated tannins augur a wine with good ageing potential.

3. Meerlust Rubicon

The oldest run family wine estate in South Africa, bought by the Myburgh family in 1756. At only 5km from False Bay, the ocean plays a significant role in wine production. Ocean breezes and evening sea mists significantly lower temperatures to produce a climate for Bordeaux like than South African. Their take on a Bordeaux blend (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc), was the first expression of the Bordeaux style in South Africa. Complex aromas of plums, spice and cedar wood. Full bodied on the palate with hints of licorice and more open in 2016 vintage to a higher percent of Merlot in the blend (29%).

4. Urban Park Appassimento, Montresor

Montresor have been making wines in the Veneto region since 1892. A very modern approach to the portfolio of wines ranging from straight Valpolicellas to Amarones. A departure from the Amarone method, here they press grapes that have been dried for 30 days following the Apassimento method. The resultant wine aged in oak casks for 6 months has the classic Corvina flavours and aromas of cherries and bramble fruit. All the taste and weight of a Valpolicella Ripasso for a lot less money. Superb value!

5. Tabula Rasa red

Wild and Wilder have their winery based in Adelaide Hills, but as is common in Australia they source their grapes from numerous sites including Langhorne Creek, Clare Valley, Barossa and of course Adelaide Hills. Tabula Rasa is Latin for “clean slate” - their policy of starting with a whole new blend each vintage. The 2017 vintage is a blend of 90% Grenache, 10% Mataro aka Mourvèdre/Monastrell. Brimful of wild bramble fruit with a hint of game. Very gluggable and a great mid-week alternative in this 500ml format.

6. Drouin Macon Bussieres

From a 35 year old low yielding plantation. The wine is aged on its fine lees for 8 months in 500L oak barrels. The ageing process with its lees gives extra texture and complexity. The wine, pale straw in appearance smells of pears, pineapples and a touch of vanilla. On the palate the wine has citrus notes, good minerality and weight. A wine of great balance with good length on the finish.

7. Ca' di Maghi Camparsi Trebbiano

This is one of my white wines of the year. From an estate and region better known for its reds (Valpol/Amarone), this stopped me in my tracks. Trebbiano, often a work-horse variety used for bulk wine, shows the class it’s capable of here. Some delicious flavours (grapefruit, lychee, wild herbs) with incredible poise and presence in the mouth.

8. Chateau de la Negly La Brise Marine

Not since Lucy Wood chose my best mate over me back in 1982, has anything been so unjustly over-looked. This is from a beautiful spot, a pitching wedge away from the Med, made from the renowned Rhone varietals, Roussanne, Marsanne and Bourboulenc. Sumptuous and exotic, with a spicy opulence and a deft, focussed finish. Don’t do a Lucy.

9. Domaine Les Noyers Madiran

This is the best signing since Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk, and a wine imbued with a similar mix of power and effortless grace, with all its ligaments still in place. Madiran is home to the Tannat variety, renowned for its fierce tannins and palindromic charm. Here, those tannins are tamed to produce a dark, moody mix of chocolate and hazelnut, with an impressive concentration of cassis and damson fruit. More drama than you’d find in most wines at twice the price.

10. Waterkloof Circumstance Cabernet Franc

Continuing our efforts to convert Cheshire folk to the joy of Cabernet Franc! This is a remarkable effort. From one of the windiest, foggiest vineyards on the Cape, this has no shortage of fruit or flavour, but somehow weighs in at a head-scratching 12.5% alcohol. This rare combination of intensity and lightness is something to behold. Tastes like a decent Grand Cru St Emilion from the 80s when the planet was a few degrees cooler. Incredible value too.

11. Contino Reserva Rioja

We've long loved the wines from Contino, and proudly stock this consistently impressive Reserva, as well as their Gran Reserva and iconic Vina del Olivo. Unlike many producers who blend wine from across the region, often with purchased fruit, this is effectively a single estate Rioja. Indeed, it was the first producer to take this approach back in 1972, with all fruit sourced from their own vineyards surrounding Finca de San Rafael. Tempranillo provides soft, plush, red fruit, whilst Graciano adds real freshness and lift. A mix of French and American oak adds the rest. A hugely satisfying red and exceptional value for money.

12. Curly Flat Pinot Noir

Prepare for sensual overload. Violets, pot pourri and black raspberry aromas lure you in, before a luscious mix of kirsch and cocoa dance across your tongue. Your left with a fine interplay between tannin and acidity that will leave you scratching your head, wondering what the £^$& just happened there! You fell in love, that's what that was. From the trendy Macedon Ranges growing zone, the coolest spot on mainland Australia, made by the highly respected Matt Harrop.

13. Iris Malbec

I would understand if you scrolled quickly past this, scarred as you still are by previous experiences with Argentinean Malbec at this price. This might well change your mind, just like Kylie's third album, and make you realise there is class and substance to be found. Bright and fresh, with none of that overly clunky, aggressive 'entry' Malbec crunch. Perky plum and cherry fruit, with a beautifully balanced, unashamedly medium bodied finish.

14. San Fiorenzo Bolgheri

A real find this: a Merlot/Cabernet blend from the fabled Tuscan region known as Bolgheri. Home to Sassicaia and Ornellaia, which are remarkable wines and both present on my rather impressive dessert island wine rack. However, I could buy 10 of these for a bottle of either of those, and as I'm a poor wine merchant struggling to make ends meet on paltry margins, this is more my bag. And not a fake, Louis Vuitton look-a-like bag, but a wine with real personality that's very comfortable in its own skin. Back fruit, plum and mint notes waft from the glass. The palate comes across as a bit grrippy initially, but softens beautifully on the finish. Lovely, saturated fruit, with a mix of bramble and cassis, with a catchy cedar twist. Bloody great now with a decent ragu, and will continue to improve if you fancy sticking a few bottles away for a few years.

15. Iris Merlot

South American Merlot under a tenner usually gets about as many pulses racing as a raunchy episode of Coronation Street, but this effort has quietly built quite a devoted following. Not the most cerebral of wines, but I think we've all had enough of thinking for a good while yet, and this supple, smooth, easy, dare-I-say, nice red, is a handy fella to have in the rack.
