Chianti Classico 2021 Case Offer
I see it as my duty to flag/flog such rare events to you. In short, 2021 is one of the greatest ever vintages in Chianti. I have tucked in and I heartily recommend that you do too. In addition to this rare climatic Godsend, the viticultural practices and winemaking know-how prevalent in the region are the best they’ve ever been, leading to the creation of a number of memorable wines that stop you in your tracks. In short, these are amongst the greatest Chiantis ever made in the region’s rich history. Allow me to quote one of the most respected wine journalists, Antonio Galloni, who describes them as “some of the most exciting young wines I have tasted in more than 25 years of visiting the region.”
Admittedly, many of the estates that follow bottle more premium cuvées, many of them ‘Super-Tuscans’ that will set you back over £100/bottle. For me, these Chiantis are the most authentic, classical representations of these estates, unclobbered by new oak to satisfy American palates, and the wines upon which their reputations rest. I have selected examples from some of my favourite estates that we’ve supported for most, if not all, of our nearly 25 years trading.
The beautiful rolling hills of Chianti Classico span more that 70,000ha, with a myriad of microclimates and soil types. What differentiates Chianti from other major wine regions such as Napa and Bordeaux, is that just 10,000ha of these are under vine, with the biodiversity of forests and other crops providing not just that breath-taking backdrop, but a naturally balanced environment that allows many of these growers to farm organically. These families have centuries of history and a deep sense of responsibility to nurture their land- these wines are testament to that.
The wines I’ve selected represent wildly different terroirs that each enjoyed the warm, dry conditions that prevailed in 2021. We’ll head from Greve, to Panzano, to Castelnuovo Berardenga, to Castellina. They’re delicious already but my best advice with this selection is to hide them away for as long as you can bear. They’re striking now but will deliver the most amazing value if you can leave them alone for 4-10 years. We offered a similar offer to this back in 2013, with similar advice, and a number of you commented some years later how great they became. In short, dive in!
We’re opening them up on Saturday so pop in for a taste. If you want the full blurb, I’ll be running a few free 30 min ‘masterclasses’, one at 12pm, one at 3pm and one at 5pm. Please reply if you’d like to join in one of these.
The case contains 1bt each of the 2021 Chianti Classicos from the following estates:
Fontodi £36
Querciabella £31
Fonterutoli £28
Isole & Olena £35
Ormanni £25
Felsina Berardenga £30
The shelf price for a bottle of each of these would work out at £185. We’re offering these at a reckless £155 for the 6. Not quite sure why! Whilst stocks last. I would strongly recommend grabbing a couple or more so you can enjoy them at various stages of their evolution. If you buy 4 or more, they’re yours for £150/6 (in-store only as I can’t work out how to do it on the website!)
