ReFINE:
COTERIE SEMILLON SAUVIGNON

A clever blending of 80% Semillon (fermented in oak barrels for 10 months) with Sauvignon Blanc (stainless steel fermented with gross lees contact for 10 months). The use of oak and lees contact gives added texture and complexity to the wine. Quite a floral nose with citrus, pear and honeyed notes. A delicate balance Is struck between citrus fruit, grassy notes and creaminess. Complex and lingering.

Ca' di Maghi Camparsi Trebbiano

This is one of my white wines of the year. From an estate and region better known for its reds (Valpol/Amarone), this stopped me in my tracks. Trebbiano, often a work-horse variety used for bulk wine, shows the class it’s capable of here. Some delicious flavours (grapefruit, lychee, wild herbs) with incredible poise and presence in the mouth.

Chateau de la Negly La Brise Marine

Not since Lucy Wood chose my best mate over me back in 1982, has anything been so unjustly over-looked. This is from a beautiful spot, a pitching wedge away from the Med, made from the renowned Rhone varietals, Roussanne, Marsanne and Bourboulenc. Sumptuous and exotic, with a spicy opulence and a deft, focussed finish. Don’t do a Lucy.

Domaine Les Noyers Madiran

This is the best signing since Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk, and a wine imbued with a similar mix of power and effortless grace, with all its ligaments still in place. Madiran is home to the Tannat variety, renowned for its fierce tannins and palindromic charm. Here, those tannins are tamed to produce a dark, moody mix of chocolate and hazelnut, with an impressive concentration of cassis and damson fruit. More drama than you’d find in most wines at twice the price.

Waterkloof Circumstance Cabernet Franc

Continuing our efforts to convert Cheshire folk to the joy of Cabernet Franc! This is a remarkable effort. From one of the windiest, foggiest vineyards on the Cape, this has no shortage of fruit or flavour, but somehow weighs in at a head-scratching 12.5% alcohol. This rare combination of intensity and lightness is something to behold. Tastes like a decent Grand Cru St Emilion from the 80s when the planet was a few degrees cooler. Incredible value too.

The Liberator Chenin No5

The Liberator is a project by an English MW friend, with unrivalled connections in the Cape. Ever the opportunist, he snaps up canny parcels from some of South Africa’s greatest estates- this is his 5th parcel of Chenin, hence the name and the no-doubt illegal take on Chanel No5 on the label! Grab it before it’s banned! We’re not allowed to reveal the source, suffice to say it is from arguably the leading interpreter of Chenin Blanc outside of the Loire. A full, rounded style, with quince and peach fruit with a toasty, woody note on the finish. A very serious bottle at a laughable price!

Contino Reserva Rioja

We've long loved the wines from Contino, and proudly stock this consistently impressive Reserva, as well as their Gran Reserva and iconic Vina del Olivo. Unlike many producers who blend wine from across the region, often with purchased fruit, this is effectively a single estate Rioja. Indeed, it was the first producer to take this approach back in 1972, with all fruit sourced from their own vineyards surrounding Finca de San Rafael. Tempranillo provides soft, plush, red fruit, whilst Graciano adds real freshness and lift. A mix of French and American oak adds the rest. A hugely satisfying red and exceptional value for money.

Curly Flat Pinot Noir

Prepare for sensual overload. Violets, pot pourri and black raspberry aromas lure you in, before a luscious mix of kirsch and cocoa dance across your tongue. Your left with a fine interplay between tannin and acidity that will leave you scratching your head, wondering what the £^$& just happened there! You fell in love, that's what that was. From the trendy Macedon Ranges growing zone, the coolest spot on mainland Australia, made by the highly respected Matt Harrop.

ACONCAGUA COSTA ERRAZURIZ PINOT NOIR

Ok, this is not a Burgundy Pinot but equally it’s not £30 a bottle. Cool climate is so very important for this fickle grape and Errazuriz, the giants of the Chilean wine scene, have come up trumps again. Consistently one of the highest rated Chilean Pinots - cherry fruit, hints of violet and smokey notes. Perfect companion for duck.

San Fiorenzo Bolgheri

A real find this: a Merlot/Cabernet blend from the fabled Tuscan region known as Bolgheri. Home to Sassicaia and Ornellaia, which are remarkable wines and both present on my rather impressive dessert island wine rack. However, I could buy 10 of these for a bottle of either of those, and as I'm a poor wine merchant struggling to make ends meet on paltry margins, this is more my bag. And not a fake, Louis Vuitton look-a-like bag, but a wine with real personality that's very comfortable in its own skin. Back fruit, plum and mint notes waft from the glass. The palate comes across as a bit grrippy initially, but softens beautifully on the finish. Lovely, saturated fruit, with a mix of bramble and cassis, with a catchy cedar twist. Bloody great now with a decent ragu, and will continue to improve if you fancy sticking a few bottles away for a few years.

Monviert Schioppettino

Monviert are based in Fruili close to the border with Slovenia and they have made a name for their ancient native grape varieties. Monviert farm some 26 hectares of land but the Schioppettino grapes are found on a single 1.8 hectare plot from which only 3000 bottles are made annually. On the nose a panoply of red fruit - red currants, cherries, plums and raspberries. The same fruit appear on the palate but with finishing notes of chocolate and licorice.

Fermented in stainless steel and aged in a mixture of stainless steel and used Slavonian oak barrels. Blueberries, cherries and sweet spices on the nose. Contino Vina del Olivo

Contino’s most acclaimed plot of old vines surrounding a 700 year old olive tree - hence it’s names. Fermentation takes place in old oak vats before the secondary Malolactic fermentation performed in new barrels before ageing for 17 months in a combination of oak casks from various countries. The 2015 vintage was characterized by even rainfall throughout the growing season. The grapes were accordingly healthy and promise a wine with great ageing potential . Still in its youth the wine exudes blackberry and blueberry fruit with the first notes of balsamic, licorice, aniseed and mint beginning to emerge. A wine with many years ahead of it.

L’Ecole No.41 Merlot

Before irrigation was brought to the Walla Walla sub-region of Columbia Valley, the land was in essence desert. A blend predominantly comprising 78% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. The smell of black cherries, plums and rose petals and the flavour of cherries, blackberries and cocoa suggest perhaps a St Emillion with the dial turned up a few notches!

Charles Heintz Littorai Chardonnay

From the cool climate Bodega Bay coastline, an organically farmed site 250m above sea level. 90% of the wine spends 11 months in French oak of which 25% is new oak and the remaining 10% is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel. This 10% portion adds welcome freshness to this full bodied wine. Rich Burgundian character with a soft creaminess on the palate complementing the baked apple, apricot and peach flavours.
