Garzon Tannat Reserve

Tannat is to Uruguay what Malbec is to Argentina. Malbec came from Cahors, whilst Tannat hailed from Madiran, both in South West France, but both have settled admirably, evolving a style all of their own that threatens to dwarf the popularity of their motherlands.

Most local clones are selected for high volume, whereas the plantings at Garzon were selected afresh from prime French stock. On top of that, the vineyards are sited on poor soils, just 11km from the cooling effects of the Atlantic, on a variety of terrains and exposures, with over 200 hectares spread across over 1000 parcels of vines. This attention to detail is continued in the winery, with uber-consultant Alberto Antonini applying his Midas touch. Tannat is renowned for sadomasochistic levels of tannin, but here they are present, but polished and help provide a wine with great presence and energy, whilst retaining real sense of elegance. Red and black fruit, with white pepper notes and a spicy, moody finish.

Perfect with roast leg of lamb studded with rosemary and garlic.
